Field Trip Aboard IDA MAY - Jericho High School
What an exciting and insightful day on the water! This past Wednesday, 21 students from Jericho High School visited The WaterFront Center for a field trip aboard our historic IDA MAY. Our educators set up multiple stations around the boat for students to rotate through during the 5-hour excursion. From testing water quality and learning about oysters to identifying plankton, each activity involved taking samples directly from the water we were floating on. As a treat, once all the stations were completed, we even had time for a couple of dredges, finding urchins, crabs, and more oysters that everyone (educators included!) had fun picking up and learning about.
To end the day, the students had a chance to seine on Beekman Beach, catching silversides, blue snappers, and a pipefish!
This experience was more than just a field trip, it was a lesson in how important the Oyster Bay Harbor estuary is not only for the ecosystem, but for the people who visit it. Our education programs are a wonderful way to ignite passion in students by getting them outside and introducing them to the field firsthand. By providing hands-on learning opportunities, we are able to introduce future environmental scientists to the experiences and processes behind the information they are taught in classrooms.
