Junior Summer Program Session 2
These past two week, July 6th - July 17th, marked the second session of our Junior Summer Program! From rainy days to summer heat waves, campers made the most of their time at The WaterFront Center, building new skills and creating unforgettable memories on Oyster Bay Harbor and in the classroom. Marine Explorers
Bay Buccaneers
The Bay Buccaneers worked on getting out into the water, learning about beaches and coasts. They started by seining and learning about our local fish species and moved into snuggling for small eels in our stream. As the weeks went on and friendship formed, they began to venture further out together, even enjoying a kayak tour. As Session 2 wrapped up, they enjoyed a joyride on the launch boat and made pirate hats to go with the occasion.
First Mates
The First Mates engaged in a variety of activities around the water and about the creatures that live in it. They learned about beavers and made a dam of their own, went kayaking and seining, and learned microscopy by performing a plankton tow and looking at mosquito larvae.
Mariners
The Mariners engaged in marine education through hands-on craft activities, enhancing their knowledge on local marine life and ecosystems. They also had a blast spending time on Oyster Bay Harbor. More details coming soon!
Sound Swashbucklers
The Sound Swashbucklers spent time sailing Opti boats while continuing to build their sailing skills and confidence on the water. They also participated in hands-on marine education activities, including seining for fish to learn more about the local marine ecosystem.
Skippers
The Skippers built upon their marine education skills through a variety of activities throughout the week. They kayaked to Crab Island, learned about sharks and their unique teeth, created UV bracelets, and painted t-shirts.
Youth Sailing
Discover Sailing
The Discover Sailing group spent time sailing on Oyster Bay Harbor. Through time spent aboard the Hobie Wave, campers had a blast on the water while learning sailing procedures. More details coming soon!
Adventure Sailing
Adventure sailing enjoyed sailing hobbies and C420s. They practiced a variety of skills such as tacking, points of sail, and upwind sailing. The class also had the opportunity to sail out to local beaches on the last two days of the session!
Beginner Sailing
The Beginner Sailing campers developed sailing fundamentals by learning how to steer, how sails function, and techniques for sailing upwind. More details coming soon!
Opti Sailing
The Opti Sailing group engaged in key sailing skills and procedures. They spent plenty of time on the water on Opti boats, which strengthened their skills and growth as sailors. More details coming soon!
C420 Open
The C420 Open group spent their afternoons on the water sailing C420s while building fundamental sailing skills. Throughout the session, campers gained confidence handling the C420s and continued developing their knowledge through hands-on experiences.
C420 Race Team
The C420 Race Team participated in two regattas: Western Districts at Sea Cliff Yacht Club and Larchmont Junior Race Week at Larchmont Yacht Club. Two boats made the podium at Western Districts, taking home first and third; and while Larchmont offered a larger and more competitive fleet, we persevered and finished strong with an eighth place, and a sixteenth place out of forty-three boats! Our strong efforts at these regattas secured our place for three boats so far at JSA of LIS Championships!

Pro Casters
The Pro Casters had an exciting week fishing aboard IDA MAY on Oyster Bay Harbor. Throughout the week, campers caught a variety of fish, including fluke, porgies, weakfish, sea robins, and dogfish. Campers sharpened their fishing techniques and enjoyed hands-on experiences on the water. Despite the summer heat and smoky conditions, the harbor provided a great place for another successful week of fishing adventures.
