Week 3 Junior Summer Program

For this week, Marine Explorers focused on the 3rd Ocean principle, Weather and Global Climate Change: The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.

Bay Buccaneers: (Grade 1 & 2) As part of the 3rd Ocean Principal, the Bay Buccaneers explored different types of clouds, the water cycle, and the impact of precipitation on ocean pollution. They made puffy clouds with shaving foam and glue and used the leftover homemade puffy paint to make cloud slime!

Sound Swash (Grades 3 & 4): Discussed the difference in clouds and how they formed and made their puffy clouds! They also discovered how rainbows are made and used different colors to create rainbows to add to their puffy clouds.

First Mates (Grade 5 & 6): learned the water cycle and how to use American Sign Language to teach it! The group also went seining on Beekman Beach, where they caught a Northern Kingfish! They created an ecosystem environment for the fish so that they could learn more about them all week.

Skippers (Grades 7 - 10): Analyzed weather systems, how they form, and their impact on the atmosphere. On the CHRISTEEN, Skippers discovered how important Oysters are in Oyster Bay Harbor and to the greater ecosystem of Long Island.

Opti Beginner (Ages 8 - 12): Worked on upwind sailing, which many of the kids got a good grasp on. Sailors learned about how the wind affects their boats and different points of sail.

Opti Intro (Ages 8 - 13): Started the week by getting comfortable and re-familiarizing themselves with the Opti's. They then advanced to learning sailing up and downwind techniques and capped the week off with race starts.

Opti Race (Ages 8 - 15): Our Opti Race Team had a lot of fun while learning this week! At the beginning of the week, the students practiced race starts and applied off-water lessons by playing games to monitor boat lines and currents. They also played a fun game of opti soccer to work on boat handling skills and help find the favored side of the course.

c420 Beginner (Ages 13 - 18): Started the week with a walk-through rigging lesson. The sailors became familiar with all the lines and components by assembling the boat. Through our instructors' sailing courses, they sharpened up their tacking and gibing skills.

c420 Race (Ages 13 - 18): The c420 Race Team focused on boat handling and worked on roll tacks and upwind speed & point. They also practiced keeping the spinnaker full without the pole and through gibes.

Adventure Sailing (8 - 17): This week, many new adventure sailors learned to rig and sail hobies for the first time! During the first part of the week, they practiced sailing in light winds and raced to Bayville at the end of the week.
