Week 5 Junior Summer Recap

Week 5 of Junior Summer was great! Marine Explorers focused on Ocean Principal 5 this week, “Life Under The Sea” Sailors took to Oyster Bay Harbor and continued to learn from the best instructors on LI!

Bay Buccaneers: (Grade 1 & 2): This week spent a lot of time in the water to cool off and find animals they could put in their alphabet book. The Bay Bucs found something very special this week… A SEAHORSE!

Sound Swash (Grades 3 & 4): learned about adaptations and created their own animals out of construction paper and pipe cleaners! The Sound Swash also became fishermen this week fishing off the pier and learning about coral reefs and the anthropogenic pollutants causing coral bleaching.

First Mates (Grade 5 & 6): Spent time doing beach walks where they searched for and learned about native invasive crabs. The First Mates were very interested in Shark Week, so they learned about common shark misconceptions while they built sandcastles and made their own tie-dye shirts!

Skippers (Grades 7 - 10): this week spent time on Oyster Sloop CHRISTEEN where they learned and searched for microplastic and abiotic/biotic factors. While in the classroom, Skippers did intense research on manatees and mermaids.

Opti Beginner (Ages 8 - 12): started the week by learning the parts of the boat and how to rig the sail. As the week progressed, sailors learned the points of sail and started sailing upwind, downwind, and reaches.

Opti Race (Ages 8 – 15): This week focused on honing the specific racing skills of mark rounding and traveling upwind at the highest possible angle. Instructors set Upwind and downwind courses for the sailors to compete and practice getting better times on.

c420 Beginner (Ages 13 - 18): Improved their sailing tactics in light conditions and became more comfortable with rigging and boat handling.

c420 Race (Ages 13 - 18): practiced trapezing and flying the spinnaker in the LI sound to simulate conditions at champs. Sailors also drilled starts and more races with other classes to acclimate to fleet racing.

Adventure Sailing (Ages 8 – 17): This week took turns skippering on the hobie getaway and learned how to sail with the jib.
