Week 8 of Junior Summer Program

As we head home on the last day of JSP, all sunkissed and tired, we reflect on the unforgettable memories we had here at The WFC this summer. Marine Explorers enjoyed their final week, “Saving the Sound,” to repair and maintain the environment for future generations.

Bay Buccaneers: (Grade 1 & 2): Took to CHRISTEEN to enjoy sails, where they learned about sharks and explored the wildlife in Oyster Bay from dredging. The Bay Bucs enjoyed time on “The Mothership,” the giant 17ft paddleboard, paddling through the harbor and jumping in the water to show off their most astonishing jumps and play tag.

Sound Swash (Grades 3 & 4): experimented with forever-stay sand to make their own. Soundswash also went on Oyster Sloop CHRISTEEN, dredged for animals, and focused on different types of shells, their properties, and the animals which make them.

First Mates (Grades 5 & 6) & Skippers (Grades 7 - 10): This week, the group made slime using borax, glue, and shaving cream. Marine explorers also learned about the importance of oysters in Oyster Bay. They counted, measured, and helped to clean the oysters to preserve the bay!

Opti Beginner (Ages 8 - 12): Opti couldn’t have asked for a better week to finish the season. The wind was consistent and light, perfect for learning and fine-tuning light-wind sailing skills. Sailors began the week practicing upwind sail trim and finished it off with full-course races.

Opti Intro (Ages 8 - 13): & Opti Race (Ages 8 - 15): Accomplished a lot of learning to race opti while having time for some fun on the water. Sailors adventured to Bayville while sailing Hobies and tennis ball tag.

C420 Intro (Ages 13 - 18): Became comfortable sailing in high wind and learned to race a regatta. Sailors also learned many advanced sail techniques like roll tacks and using their tell tales.

c420 Beginner (Ages 13 - 18): Took the week by storm and started with on-land drills, progressed to on-water experiences, capsize recoveries, and team sailing. Sailors ended the week with a friendly sonar regatta, showcasing the skills everyone had learned.

c420 Race (Ages 13 - 18): To end the season, C420 Race ran practice regattas using our culminated racing knowledge and even took on the course in sonar and hobies

Adventure Sailing (Ages 8 - 17): Sailed to the Bayville Bridge and Pirates Cove and enjoyed swimming in the center of the harbor by practicing capsizing drills.
