About the Christeen Oyster Sloop
History and current mission of the Christeen, North America's oldest oyster sloop
After surviving 16 major hurricanes, numerous nor'easters, two sinkings and severe neglect, the Christeen was returned home to Oyster Bay in 1992. A dedicated group of volunteers worked tirelessly on the restoration of the Christeen — working along side a full-time shipwright and raising more than $300,000. The Christeen was completely restored and launched in 1999.
The Christeen's new mission is to serve as a floating classroom. Her Coast Guard Certified Captains and experienced crew educate up to 24 passengers about maritime history, marine science, coastal ecology, the oyster industry and aquaculture.
If you would like to have a hands-on, personal experience aboard the Christeen, we offer Harbor Tours, Fall Foliage Tours, Friday Evening Sails, Sunset Cruises and Dinner, Public Marine Education Sails, Bay Day and Oyster Festival Sails, and for a very special experience, you may book a Private Charter with family, friends or co-workers.
